Double-hung vs. single-hung
Both sashes of a double-hung window move, and most tilt in for cleaning from inside. A single-hung window has a fixed top sash. HomeAdvisor puts single-hung at $200–$600 (average $400) against $400–$1,000 for double-hung (HomeAdvisor, June 17, 2026). Modernize suggests the extra cost pays off most on multi-story homes, where tilt-in cleaning and top-sash ventilation matter. On single-story homes, single-hung may be the more cost-effective choice. It also says the added cost may not be justified in very hot or cold climates where windows stay closed (Modernize, August 12, 2026).
Labor share
Modernize's double-hung guide puts the split at 92.9% materials and 7.1% labor. Its vinyl guide gives 30%–45% labor. Because the sources disagree this much, the calculator doesn't show a split. See the methodology.
