Pricing sources checked October 27, 2026 · How we calculate
The table prices both methods for the same windows. In this model, full-frame replacement costs 25% more. For 10 vinyl double-hung windows that's $6,800 vs. $8,400 at the typical point, a difference of $1,600.
Insert vs. full-frame: what's the difference?
| Insert (retrofit / pocket) | Full-frame | |
|---|---|---|
| What's removed | Old sashes and stops. The existing frame, interior trim and exterior trim stay. | The whole window down to the rough opening, often with interior and exterior trim. |
| Best when | Frames are square, dry and solid | Frames are rotted, out of square or leaking, or you want to fix flashing or change the opening |
| Glass area | Slightly smaller, because the new frame sits inside the old one | Same as or larger than the original |
| Labor | Faster, with less finish work | More labor, flashing and trim work |
What each method costs
| Source | Insert / retrofit | Full-frame |
|---|---|---|
| Angi (installed cost per window) | $100–$300 | $180–$1,500 |
| HomeAdvisor (labor per window) | $100–$300 | $150–$800 |
| Insight Glass (Bay Area, installed, mid-grade vinyl) | $450–$900 | $700–$1,300 |
Angi doesn't say whether its figures include the window unit. Its retrofit range matches its per-window labor range, so compare them as the cost of the method, not a full installed price. Insight Glass is a Bay Area installer. It reports that full-frame runs 25%–50% more than retrofit for equivalent specifications, with 25%–40% higher labor (Insight Glass (Bay Area installer), August 19, 2026). That's a regional example, but it brackets this calculator's 25% national assumption.
How to decide
- Check the frames. Probe the sill and lower jambs with a screwdriver. Soft wood, peeling paint over swelling, or water stains below the window point toward full-frame.
- Check for leaks. If water gets in around the frame (not just through the glass), an insert won't fix the flashing behind it.
- Consider the glass loss. On small windows, an insert's extra frame width cuts noticeably into the view.
- Look at the exterior. Stucco, brick and some siding make full-frame removal more invasive. That's often the deciding factor for keeping the frames.
- Price both. Ask installers to quote both methods for the same windows, then compare the gap with the table above.
Angi also notes older homes can add $100–$500 per window, and hidden structural repairs $100–$2,000 or more (Angi, October 15, 2026). Those costs come up most often with full-frame jobs, when the old frame comes out.

Frequently asked questions
How much more does full-frame window replacement cost?
This calculator adds 25%. Insight Glass, a Bay Area installer, reports 25%–50% more for equivalent windows. HomeAdvisor puts full-frame labor at $150–$800 per window, against $100–$300 for retrofit.
Is insert replacement as energy efficient as full-frame?
The new insert unit performs like any new window, but it can't fix air leaks or failed flashing in the old frame and the wall around it. If drafts come from around the frame, full-frame lets the installer air-seal and flash the opening.
What is a pocket replacement window?
It's another name for an insert or retrofit window: a complete new window set into the "pocket" of the existing frame once the old sashes are removed.
Can I mix insert and full-frame in one project?
Yes. Many projects use inserts where frames are sound and full-frame where there's rot. Run the calculator twice, or use the whole-house calculator for each group.
