With the defaults (10 windows, insert installation, ground floor), labor alone comes to $1,000 – $3,000. Full-frame labor for the same 10 windows is $1,500 – $8,000. The full installed price for 10 vinyl double-hung windows in this site's model is $4,500 – $9,500, because the window unit itself is most of the bill.
Where the labor rates come from
| Source | Labor per window | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| HomeAdvisor (window replacement) | $100–$300 retrofit / insert; $150–$800 full-frame | Labor by installation method; used for the labor-only result |
| HomeAdvisor (install windows) | $100–$400; about 15% of the cost | General per-window installation labor |
| Angi | $100–$300 ($50–$65 an hour); $600 or more for upper-story or complex installs | Labor rate and complexity range |
The labor-only result uses HomeAdvisor's method-specific ranges (HomeAdvisor, June 17, 2026). HomeAdvisor's general install guide gives $100–$400 per window (HomeAdvisor, June 17, 2026), and Angi $100–$300, rising past $600 for upper-story or complex work (Angi, October 15, 2026). The 12% upper-floor uplift is this site's own editorial multiplier (see the methodology), not a figure from those sources.
Labor-only or full install?
- Labor-only fits when you've bought the windows yourself (a big-box store or a manufacturer's dealer) and hire an installer. Ask whether the installer warranties work on windows they didn't supply; many limit it.
- Full install (the installer supplies the windows) is how most replacement quotes are written. Labor is rarely itemized, and sources disagree on its share, from about 7% to 45% of the price (see why we don't show a fixed split).
- Either way, confirm who handles removal and disposal, interior and exterior trim, permits and rot repair. None of those are in the labor figure above.
To price the whole project with every option, use the window replacement cost calculator; to compare methods in detail, the full-frame vs. insert calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install a window if I buy it myself?
Labor-only installation runs about $100–$300 per window for an insert (retrofit) and $150–$800 for full-frame, according to HomeAdvisor. Upper-floor and complex installs cost more; Angi says labor can reach $600 or more per window.
Why is the full installed price so much higher than labor?
Because the window unit is usually the larger share. Modernize's main calculator puts materials at about 85% of its $1,047 average; other sources give labor shares up to about 45%.
Does this include removal, trim and permits?
No. The labor ranges are for installing the window. Ask each installer to list removal and disposal, trim, permits and any rot repair as separate lines.
