Pricing sources checked October 27, 2026 · How we calculate
How this estimate is calculated: the formula, every input and five worked examples.
The quote amount stays in your browser. It isn't sent or stored. Set the windows above to match the quote line by line first.
How the check works
The checker runs the same estimate as the main calculator for the windows you describe, then places your quoted total against that range. It reports one of three results: below the low end, inside the range (with how far up it sits and whether it's above or below the typical point), or above the high end. It also divides the quote by the window count so you can compare per-window prices. The range comes from a published editorial model; every multiplier is on the methodology page.
Three example checks
The quote amounts here are made-up inputs to show each outcome; the ranges are the calculator's real output for those windows.
| Windows quoted | Example quote | Calculator range | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 vinyl double-hung windows, Low-E, insert, ground floor, average region | $9,000 | $4,500 – $9,500 (typical $6,800) | inside the range, 90% of the way from low to high (above the typical point) |
| 6 fiberglass casement windows, triple-pane, full-frame, upper floor, high-cost region | $21,000 | $8,950 – $18,650 (typical $13,300) | above the high end by $2,350 |
| 4 vinyl sliding windows, plain double-pane, insert, ground floor, lower-cost region | $1,200 | $1,450 – $3,550 (typical $2,400) | below the low end by $250 |

What to do with each result
- Below the range. Check what's missing before celebrating: removal and disposal, interior and exterior trim, permits, lead-safe work in pre-1978 homes, or a lower-tier product line than you asked for. Confirm it's the same installation method (an insert quote compared against a full-frame estimate will look cheap).
- Inside the range. The total is consistent with the model for those windows. Compare the line items between quotes instead, and ask for the U-factor and warranty terms in writing.
- Above the range. Not automatically a rip-off. Large or custom sizes, specialty shapes, rot repair and premium brands all push prices beyond a planning model. Ask the installer to itemize, and price any repair allowance separately.
Getting a fair comparison
- Match the specification. Set style, frame, glass, insert or full-frame, and floor exactly as the quote describes. If the quote mixes styles or floors, check each group separately or use the whole-house calculator and compare the total by hand.
- Use the right region. The lower-cost, average and high-cost levels move the range by 0.90×, 1.00× and 1.15×.
- Separate the extras. Take repair allowances, permits and add-ons such as screens or grids out of the quoted total before checking it, because the model doesn't include them (see exclusions).
- Check more than one quote. A single quote far from the range tells you what to ask about; two or three quotes tell you the market.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a window replacement quote is fair?
Describe the same windows in the checker (count, style, frame, glass, insert or full-frame, floor and region) and enter the quoted total. It shows whether the quote falls below, inside or above the estimate range, then compare line items across at least two or three quotes.
Is a quote below the range a good deal?
Not necessarily. A low quote often leaves out removal, trim, permits or repairs, or prices a different installation method or product line. Check the scope line by line first.
Why is my quote above the calculator's range?
The model covers typical sizes and standard products. Large or custom windows, specialty shapes, premium brands, rot repair and local conditions can all put a real quote above it. Ask the installer to itemize the difference.
Does the checker save or send my quote?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The quote amount is only added to the page address if you open a shared example link.
